Pharyngotympanic tube The eustachian tube is a channel that connects the middle ear to the nasofaringe, which consists of the upper throat and the back of the nasal cavity. It controls the pressure inside the middle ear, making it equal to air pressure outside the body. Most of the time the Eustachian tube is closed, opening only during activities such as yawning, swallowing and chewing, to allow the air through the passage between the middle ear and the nasofaringe. When atmospheric pressure changes quickly, causing a sudden sensation of blocking in the ear (such as during the plane trip), these activities can be done on purpose to open the tube and equal the pressure inside the middle ear. When the eustachian tube will not open enough to equip the pressure, symptoms such as discomfort, dizziness, or sound in the ear may result. The visual examination of the eardrum with an illuminated range helps to determine whether the cause is inflammation, swelling, or fluid in the ear. Conditions such as nasal congestion, ear or breast infection, or allergies can cause these symptoms and lead to problems of the eustachian tube. These causes can often be treated with decongested medicines or antibiotics, but in severe cases, surgery may be necessary. Last medical review on January 21, 2018Read this following

The Interconnected World of Hear, Nose and Throat for Life Mar 26, 2017 Silence, , It is not just your imagination. When something affects your ear, sometimes you find that it also affects your nose and throat, and vice versa. Because the ear, nose and throat are so intricately connected, they are able to function as a unit, with the pieces that make up and support the set. The disadvantage is the same: because they are so intricately connected, a disturbance in one can cause a problem in or for the other. The ear, nose and throat are part of the upper respiratory system and share the same mucous membranes. For example, it is rare that you may have problems in your ear without also experiencing problems in your nose or throat – so they seem to be affected by the same ailments – infections, swelling, drip and congestion. Whether it's hearing pressure and pain, post nasal drip or strep throat, the ear, nose and throat love to share. It's all about the structure. It's all about the structure.
